Virtual Trumpet is a fully synthesized brass instrument that runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Twelve piano-style keys let you play notes from C4 to G5, covering a range of an octave and a half. Play by clicking or tapping keys, or use your computer keyboard (A S D F G H J K L ; Z X) â hold a key to sustain the note, release to release. Multiple simultaneous notes work if you press multiple keys. Three tone styles change the character. Clean is the default bright, ringing tone appropriate for classical or fanfare music. Muted narrows the bandpass filter for a nasal, restrained tone like a trumpet with a Harmon mute. Jazz adds a 6 Hz vibrato for that expressive swing feel. The synthesis uses layered sawtooth and square waves at multiples of the fundamental frequency, all shaped by a bandpass filter tuned to the trumpet formant region â this produces the buzzy, cutting brass sound. Four preset songs demonstrate the instrument: Reveille (the military wake-up call), Charge! (the sports rally call), Taps (the evening bugle call), and a C major scale. The visual is a horizontal trumpet with a flaring bell, mouthpiece at the left, three valve pistons in the middle that press down randomly when you play a note, and sound waves that emanate from the bell in an orange glow. Family-friendly and completely non-military in its default use â it is just a beautiful brass instrument for making music.
