Virtual Saxophone is a browser-based alto saxophone with the warm, expressive reed sound of the real instrument. Twelve piano-style keys give you a chromatic range from C4 to G5. Click, tap, or hold the corresponding keyboard keys (A S D F G H J K L semicolon Z X) to play — hold to sustain, release to release. Three tone styles change the character dramatically. Smooth is the default mellow tone with gentle 4.5 Hz vibrato, ideal for ballads and pop. Jazz opens the filter and quickens the vibrato to 6 Hz for that bright, swinging jazz-club sound. Growl adds a lower sub-oscillator and deeper 8 Hz vibrato with high filter resonance for the gritty, growling tone that sax players use for blues and rock passages. Underneath the hood, the sound is generated with sawtooth and square oscillators at multiples of the fundamental frequency, each slightly detuned for warmth, all passed through a lowpass filter tuned to the sax formant. A vibrato LFO modulates the pitch continuously. Four preset melodies play automatically: a Baker Street style opening riff, a Pink Panther inspired sneak, a full blues scale, and a straight C major scale. Visually, the sax is drawn top-down as a golden brass alto with the classic curved neck, S-shaped bell at the bottom, silver key pads down the body that press when you play their corresponding note, pearl side keys, a dark reeded mouthpiece with a silver ligature at the top, and purple sound waves emanating from the bell when you play.
