About π Virtual Pan Flute
Virtual Pan Flute recreates the traditional Andean pan flute (also called panpipes or zampoΓ±a) in your browser. Ten bamboo tubes of decreasing length are lashed together with a wooden band, each tube tuned to a note in the C major scale from C4 up to E5. Click or tap a tube to blow into it and produce a soft, airy note. Hold and drag your finger or mouse across tubes to glide between notes for a legato feel. The synthesis captures the pan flute character with three components: a fundamental sine wave for the pure tonal core, gentle harmonics at 2x and 3x for warmth, and β crucially β a bandpass-filtered white noise layer that adds the characteristic breathy hiss of air rushing across the tube opening. A vibrato LFO at 4.5 Hz gives each note that characteristic quiver of a real pan flute player. Three breath styles let you change the character: Soft Breath is gentle and reflective; Strong Blow is louder and sustained longer; Short Puff is staccato, ideal for rhythmic melodies. Preset song buttons demonstrate the instrument β El CΓ³ndor Pasa (the classic Andean folk tune), Mary Had a Little Lamb, a C major scale, and a pentatonic melody. Visually, each bamboo tube has realistic wood grain and horizontal node segments like real bamboo, with a dark opening at the top and sound waves radiating upward when the tube is playing.
